Multimodal data
Best multimodal data platforms for AI apps (2026)
A multimodal data platform stores images, video, audio, documents, and structured fields so an AI app can process and retrieve them. Some products are lakes or vector stores. Others are dataframes, document parsers, dataset apps, or lakehouses. The fit depends on whether you need an application schema, a batch engine, or a hosted model API.

What a multimodal data platform is
The phrase covers several jobs. A lake or vector store keeps blobs and embeddings. A dataframe runs batch transforms over images or video at cluster scale. A document parser turns PDFs into structured elements. A dataset app lets a person look at samples and mistakes. A lakehouse governs tables, files, and models for an organization. An application schema stores typed media in tables, runs transforms when a row changes, and can serve HTTP from the same file.
Those jobs overlap on paper and diverge in production. Inserting a clip is not the same as scanning a lake. Ranking frames is not the same as converting a PDF. No honest list ranks every product first.
How to choose
Start from the work you will repeat, not from a feature matrix. Last reviewed: October 2026.
- You already have embeddings and need a fast ANN lake: a multimodal vector store.
- You need Spark- or Ray-shaped batch over petabytes of media: a distributed dataframe or Ray Data.
- The bottleneck is PDF layout, tables, and OCR: a document converter, then an index you own.
- You are curating a computer-vision set and need a visual debugger: a dataset app.
- Governance, Unity Catalog, and Spark are already the company standard: a lakehouse.
- A coding agent should write store, transforms, index, and HTTP as one reviewable file: an application schema.
The tools, by job
Short notes below. The comparison table includes an application-schema backend alongside these products. Official sources are listed in Related and were checked in October 2026.
LanceDB is a multimodal lake and vector engine on the Lance format: columnar blobs, versioned fragments, and ANN search, embedded or hosted. Processing and HTTP still sit in jobs you write. Docs: https://lancedb.github.io/lancedb/
Daft, from Eventual, is an open-source multimodal dataframe with native image, video, audio, and embedding types. The API looks like Pandas or Spark: load, transform, write. It is a batch engine, not an insert-triggered application catalog. Docs: https://docs.daft.ai/en/stable/
Deep Lake, from Activeloop, is a multimodal AI database: typed image, video, and embedding columns, TQL similarity search, and streaming into training. It is a lake and vector store; orchestration and HTTP are still yours. Docs: https://docs.deeplake.ai/4.4/
Ray Data is distributed preprocessing and ingest for AI workloads on Ray: streaming blocks, map_batches, and training pipelines. It scales a job. It is not a durable multimodal table. Docs: https://docs.ray.io/en/latest/data/data.html
LlamaIndex is a Python framework for RAG and agents: connectors, indexes, query engines, and workflows. Indexes usually land in a separate vector store. Docs: https://developers.llamaindex.ai/python/framework/
Unstructured is document ETL: partition PDFs, HTML, and Office files into elements, then chunk. The open-source library is for prototyping; Unstructured Pipelines is the production product. Docs: https://docs.unstructured.io/open-source/introduction/overview
Docling, started at IBM Research and hosted in LF AI & Data, parses PDFs and many office formats into a DoclingDocument, with local execution and exports to Markdown or JSON. It is a converter, not a serving database. Docs: https://docling-project.github.io/docling/
FiftyOne, from Voxel51, is the dataset app: embeddings, mistake views, zoo models, and evaluation. Explore there; produce elsewhere. Docs: https://docs.voxel51.com/
Databricks is a lakehouse: Unity Catalog for tables and volumes, Spark, Mosaic AI, and model serving. Unstructured media often lives in volumes; governance is the strength. Docs: https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/data-governance/unity-catalog/
The serving / deploy layer
What you would glue together otherwise still needs a process that answers HTTP. That process often lives on a host that will run any container. Railway deploys from Git, the CLI, or a Docker image and bills CPU, RAM, volume, and egress on top of a plan fee. Render is Git CI/CD for web services; free instances sleep after 15 minutes. Fly.io runs Machines in many regions from fly.toml, billed per second while they run. Modal is serverless Python and GPU compute. Vercel hosts frontends and serverless functions. None of those products is the multimodal table or the index. You still add object storage, transforms, and retrieval unless the application schema owns them. They can host that schema. Where Pixeltable fits
Pixeltable is the application-schema row: typed Image, Video, Audio, and Document columns, transforms as computed columns, embedding indexes as declarations, and FastAPIRouter in the same file. Insert a row and downstream work runs. It is open source (pip install pixeltable). Pixeltable Cloud is Limited Beta, not GA. It is not a vector database and not a labeling tool. Use LanceDB or Deep Lake when the lake is the product; Daft or Ray Data when the job is a cluster scan; Docling or Unstructured when the job is PDF conversion; FiftyOne when you need eyes on a CV set; Databricks when Unity Catalog is already the control plane.

Questions
- What is the best multimodal data platform in 2026?
- There is no single winner. Choose a lake when ANN layout is the product, a dataframe when the job is a cluster scan, a parser when PDFs are the bottleneck, a dataset app when you need a visual debugger, a lakehouse when governance is the constraint, and an application schema when a coding agent should write store, compute, index, and HTTP in one file. Pixeltable is that last job.
- Is Pixeltable a vector database or a labeling tool?
- Neither. Pixeltable is a multimodal database with orchestration and serving: media lives in tables, transforms are computed columns, and indexes are declarations. Labeling UIs (FiftyOne, Label Studio) and dedicated ANN services remain the right tools for those jobs.
- How does a dataframe such as Daft differ from an application schema?
- A dataframe loads, transforms, and writes a batch. An application schema stores rows, runs declared columns when those rows change, and can serve HTTP. Many teams run both: Daft or Ray Data for a backfill, Pixeltable for the live app.
- When is Databricks the better multimodal platform?
- When Unity Catalog, Spark, and existing lakehouse governance already own the data. Volumes hold unstructured files; tables hold structured rows. Pixeltable is a smaller Python app file, not a replacement for that control plane.
- Can a coding agent build the whole app?
- On Pixeltable, yes: one app.py with TableModel and FastAPIRouter is a single diff to review. pip install pixeltable; pxt init; pxt schema update; pxt service update. Cloud remains Limited Beta.
- Where do Railway, Render, Fly.io, Modal, and Vercel fit?
- They are the serving / deploy layer: hosts for whatever process you ship. Pixeltable is the data, orchestration, and HTTP schema in one Python file. You can run that file locally, on Pixeltable Cloud (Limited Beta), or on those hosts. Complementary, not a swap. Last reviewed: Oct 2026.
