Pixeltable and Render

Render hosts any app: connect Git, pick a compute plan, and it builds and deploys web services, workers, cron, Postgres, and Key Value. Pixeltable is the data, orchestration, and serving layer in one Python file: typed media tables, computed columns, embedding indexes, and FastAPIRouter. Render does not own that schema. Pixeltable Cloud is Limited Beta, not GA. They are complementary: Render can host the Pixeltable process.

Git CI/CD host vs the application schema

SidePixeltableRender
At a glance
  • Database, orchestration, and serving in one Python file
  • Insert a row; computed columns, indexes, and HTTP follow
  • Open source; Pixeltable Cloud is Limited Beta, not GA
  • Not a general-purpose host for arbitrary frameworks
  • Git CI/CD and render.yaml Blueprints: web, private services, cron, Postgres, Key Value
  • Hobby workspace is $0 plus compute; Pro is $25/month plus compute. Paid web compute starts at $7/month (0.5 CPU / 512 MB)
  • Free web service: 0.1 CPU / 512 MB, 750 instance hours/month, sleeps after 15 minutes of idle (~1 minute to wake)
  • Five regions (Oregon, Ohio, Virginia, Frankfurt, Singapore). Hosts any app; the data layer is still yours

Where each fits

Render wins Git-driven web services, Blueprint YAML, and a free instance that sleeps after 15 minutes. Pixeltable wins insert-triggered multimodal pipelines and HTTP declared beside the tables. FeaturePixeltableRender
What it is
Application schema: store, transform, index, serve
Cloud host for Git-connected services and datastores
Deploy any language or framework
Python Pixeltable apps; not a general PaaS
Native runtimes and Docker; Blueprint-defined stacks
Multimodal tables and incremental compute
Typed media columns; dependents of a changed row recompute
You write that layer in the process Render runs
Embedding index
EmbeddingIndex declared on the source table
A service or database you add beside the web service
HTTP serving
FastAPIRouter in the same file as the tables
The host: build/start commands, health checks, autoscaling
Free tier shape
Open source locally; Cloud Community is free in Limited Beta
750 free web-service hours/month; free instances sleep after 15 minutes

One file vs a Render Blueprint

Pixeltable: tables, chunking, EmbeddingIndex, FastAPIRouter. Render: Git CI/CD for whatever process you wrote. Last reviewed: Oct 2026. Render: https://render.com/docs/blueprint-spec and https://render.com/docs/free

Pixeltable

class Chunks(

# pxt schema update app.py docs && pxt service update app.py docs
# Or mount the router on FastAPI and host that process on Render.

Render

# render.yaml — https://render.com/docs/blueprint-spec
# Default paid web plan is 0.5c-512mb ($7/month). Free sleeps after 15 min.
services:
- type: web
name: docs-api
runtime: python
plan: 0.5c-512mb
buildCommand: pip install -r requirements.txt
startCommand: uvicorn app:app --host 0.0.0.0 --port $PORT
healthCheckPath: /health
# app.py is still ordinary FastAPI: you store files, run jobs,
# and query a vector DB you deployed beside this service.
# Render runs the container. It is not the multimodal table.

When each belongs

Use Pixeltable when

  • The app is media, models, and retrieval

One Python file for tables, computed columns, indexes, and HTTP. A coding agent writes it; you review one diff. pip install pixeltable. Cloud is Limited Beta.

  • You were about to glue FastAPI to S3, a worker, and a vector DB on Render

Render will host that stack. Pixeltable replaces the glue for this job, whether you run it locally or as the process Render deploys.

Use Render when

  • You need Git CI/CD for any web service, not only a Pixeltable schema

Blueprints, preview environments, Postgres, and Key Value. Render is the host. Docs: https://render.com/docs/blueprint-spec

  • You want a free web instance that sleeps, or paid compute by the second

Free: 750 hours/month, 0.1 CPU / 512 MB, sleep after 15 minutes. Paid from $7/month. Hobby workspace has no seat fee. https://render.com/docs/free and https://render.com/pricing

Making the right choice

  • Complementary, not a swap

    • Render hosts the process. Pixeltable is the schema inside it (or on Pixeltable Cloud, Limited Beta).
    • A typical glue stack on Render is still object storage + a background worker + a vector DB + FastAPI. The host does not collapse those boxes.
    • To run together: mount FastAPIRouter on uvicorn (docs.pixeltable.com/howto/deployment/serving) and set that as startCommand, or keep Cloud as the catalog and Render as another service.
    • Same aisle as Railway, Fly.io, Modal, and Vercel: serving and deploy, not the multimodal table.

Frequently asked questions

Declare the app file. Host it on Render if you want.

Tables, indexes, and routes in app.py. Apply with pxt schema update and pxt service update. Render still hosts whatever process you ship. Cloud is Limited Beta.
