Multimodal data

Best LanceDB alternatives

A LanceDB alternative is another place to keep multimodal blobs and vectors together, or another engine for nearest-neighbor search. LanceDB is a multimodal lakehouse on Lance: images, video, audio, text, embeddings, and features in one versioned table, as embedded OSS or Enterprise. Alternatives are other lakes, other ANN engines, or an application schema that is not a lake.

What a LanceDB alternative has to replace

LanceDB calls itself a multimodal lakehouse for AI. Official docs put curation, feature engineering, search and retrieval, and model training on one Lance table. OSS is an embedded library (Python, TypeScript, Rust). Enterprise is a distributed platform for petabyte-scale private deployments. Docs: https://docs.lancedb.com/

Processing pipelines and HTTP still sit in jobs you write unless you add them. An alternative might keep the lake job (another multimodal store), keep only the ANN job (a vector database), or keep a live application catalog that is not a Lance lake.

How to choose

Separate the lake from the index from the app.

  • Keep LanceDB when Lance layout, versioned fragments, embedded ANN, and training scans over the same table are the product.
  • Pick Deep Lake when a training-oriented lake with TQL similarity search is the contract.
  • Pick Weaviate, Qdrant, or Milvus when a dedicated vector database is the serving contract and files live elsewhere.
  • Pick Chroma when local-first collections are enough and you do not need a lakehouse format.
  • Pick pgvector when Postgres already holds the row.
  • Pick an application schema when insert should run transforms, indexes, and HTTP, and Lance is optional as an export target.

The tools

Deep Lake, from Activeloop, is a multimodal AI database: typed image, video, and embedding columns, TQL similarity search, and streaming into training. It is a lake and vector store; orchestration and HTTP are still yours. Docs: https://docs.deeplake.ai/4.4/

Chroma stores embeddings, documents, and metadata, with dense, sparse, and hybrid search. It is retrieval infrastructure, not a Lance lakehouse. Docs: https://docs.trychroma.com/docs/overview/introduction

Weaviate is an open-source vector database with hybrid BM25 plus dense search. Bytes of media usually live in object storage you add. Docs: https://docs.weaviate.io/weaviate/search/hybrid

Milvus is a distributed vector database for unstructured embeddings. Zilliz Cloud is the managed option. Docs: https://milvus.io/docs

Qdrant is a Rust vector engine with payload filters. Rows are vectors plus payload, not typed video columns. Docs: https://qdrant.tech/documentation/overview/

pgvector adds vector columns to PostgreSQL. Media usually lives in object storage. Docs: https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector

Where Pixeltable fits

Use Pixeltable when you need a live application schema: typed Image, Video, Audio, and Document columns, transforms as computed columns, EmbeddingIndex on those rows, and FastAPIRouter in the same file. It is not a Lance lakehouse and not a replacement for LanceDB at training-scan or lake-scale ANN jobs. Export embeddings with pxt.io.export_lancedb when that engine is the product. Keep Deep Lake when the training lake is the contract. Keep Weaviate, Qdrant, or Milvus when a dedicated vector database is the serving contract.

import pixeltable as pxt
from pixeltable.functions.huggingface import clip
from pixeltable.serving import FastAPIRouter
TableModel = pxt.model_base()
clip_embed = clip.using(model_id='openai/clip-vit-base-patch32')
class Images(TableModel, name='images'):
image: pxt.Image
caption: pxt.String | None
__indexes__ = [
pxt.EmbeddingIndex(image, embedding=clip_embed),
]
@pxt.query
def search_by_text(query: str, limit: int = 5):
sim = Images.image.similarity(string=query)
return (
Images.order_by(sim, asc=False)
.limit(limit)
.select(Images.image, Images.caption, sim)
)
api = FastAPIRouter(name='image_search')
api.add_insert_route(
Images,
path='/images',
inputs=[Images.caption],
uploadfile_inputs=[Images.image],
)
api.add_query_route(path='/search', query=search_by_text)

Questions

What is the best LanceDB alternative?

Deep Lake if you want another training-oriented multimodal lake. Weaviate, Qdrant, or Milvus if you only needed the ANN serving piece. Chroma if local collections are enough. Pixeltable if insert should run transforms and HTTP, and the lake is optional.

Is Pixeltable a LanceDB alternative?

For a live app that stores media, runs models, and serves HTTP, yes. For Lance layout, versioned fragments, and training scans over a lake, no. They are often complementary: pipeline in the schema, export when the index is the product. See Pixeltable vs LanceDB.

Does LanceDB replace a vector database?

LanceDB includes ANN on the same table that holds blobs. That can replace a separate vector database when Lance is the serving contract. It does not replace a hybrid BM25 engine such as Weaviate, or a dedicated Qdrant or Milvus cluster, unless you adopt Lance for that job too.

OSS or Enterprise?

LanceDB OSS is the embedded library. LanceDB Enterprise is the distributed lakehouse. Official docs: https://docs.lancedb.com/. This page does not quote prices.
