# Vector database alternatives for multimodal apps

A vector database stores embeddings and answers similarity queries. Multimodal apps also need the source files, chunking or frame extraction, and a way to keep those copies aligned when a row changes. Sometimes the index belongs on the table that holds the media. Sometimes a dedicated ANN service is the product.

## Do you need a vector database? {#do-you-need-one}

You need nearest-neighbor search so similar passages, frames, or clips can be ranked. That search can live in a dedicated product whose rows are vectors plus metadata, or as an index on the table that already stores the source pieces. The dedicated product wins when query SLA, namespaces, hybrid fusion, or billion-scale ANN is the contract. The table wins when insert should update the index and the original file must stay queryable.
A multimodal app that also chunks PDFs, extracts frames, calls models, and serves HTTP still owns those layers if the vector database is the only new box.

## How to choose {#how-to-choose}

Frame the decision as one app file versus a stack, not as a speed bake-off this page did not run. Last reviewed: October 2026.

- Keep a managed ANN service when other systems already call it and you need a vendor query SLA.
- Keep an open-source vector database when hybrid BM25 plus dense search, payload filters, or self-hosting is the product.
- Keep pgvector when Postgres is already the system of record and the vector column can live next to the rest of the row.
- Keep LanceDB when Lance layout and embedded ANN are the serving contract.
- Skip a second database when the table that holds documents or frames can declare the index and recompute on insert.

## Pinecone and common alternatives {#the-tools}

These products are vector indexes. None of them is a multimodal application schema by itself. Official sources were checked in October 2026.
Pinecone is a managed vector index: dense and sparse retrieval, namespaces, and a hosted query API. You embed and upsert; source bytes live elsewhere. Docs: https://docs.pinecone.io/ and https://www.pinecone.io/learn/vector-database/
Weaviate is an open-source vector database with collections, named vectors, and hybrid search that fuses BM25 with dense similarity (alpha balances the two). Weaviate Cloud is the hosted option. Docs: https://docs.weaviate.io/weaviate/search/hybrid
Qdrant is an open-source vector search engine written in Rust, with payload filters, dense and sparse vectors, and Qdrant Cloud. Docs: https://qdrant.tech/documentation/ and https://github.com/qdrant/qdrant
Chroma is open-source retrieval infrastructure: collections of embeddings, documents, and metadata, with local, single-node, and distributed modes, plus Chroma Cloud. Docs: https://docs.trychroma.com/docs/overview/introduction
LanceDB stores multimodal blobs and vectors on Lance and serves ANN, embedded or hosted. Docs: https://lancedb.github.io/lancedb/
pgvector is a PostgreSQL extension: vector columns, exact or HNSW/IVFFlat search, and SQL joins with the rest of the row. Docs: https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector

## One app file versus a stack {#one-file-vs-stack}

A typical glue stack is object storage for files, a database for titles, a job to chunk or dump frames, an embedder, a vector database, and FastAPI in front. Changing the model or the sample rate touches every joint.
The HTTP process itself is another box. Railway, Render, and Fly.io will host whatever FastAPI you ship. Modal will run the GPU function. Vercel will host the frontend. The vector database is still not the table, and the host is still not the index. Last reviewed: October 2026.
The other shape is one schema: typed media columns, chunking or frames as a view, the embedding index on that view, and HTTP declared next to the tables. Insert updates the affected rows. A separate vector database stays optional when something else is already the serving contract.

Vendor facts were checked against official documentation in October 2026. Hybrid-search parameters, client APIs, and cloud SKUs change; follow the links in Related.

## Where Pixeltable fits {#where-pixeltable-fits}

Pixeltable is not a vector database. It is a multimodal database that can declare pxt.EmbeddingIndex on the column that holds the passage or frame, so insert and delete keep the index current. Query with column.similarity(string=...). That is enough for many RAG and video-search apps. Keep Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma, LanceDB, or pgvector when that engine is the serving contract. Open source: pip install pixeltable. Pixeltable Cloud is Limited Beta, not GA.

```python
import pixeltable as pxt
from pixeltable.functions.document import document_splitter
from pixeltable.functions.huggingface import sentence_transformer
from pixeltable.serving import FastAPIRouter
TableModel = pxt.model_base()
embed = sentence_transformer.using(
    model_id='sentence-transformers/all-MiniLM-L6-v2'
)
class Docs(TableModel, name='docs'):
    document: pxt.Document
    title: pxt.String
class Chunks(
    TableModel,
    name='chunks',
    base=Docs,
    iterator=document_splitter(
        document=Docs.document, separators='sentence,token_limit', limit=512
    ),
):
    __indexes__ = [pxt.EmbeddingIndex(text, string_embed=embed)]
@pxt.query
def search_docs(query: str, limit: int = 5):
    sim = Chunks.text.similarity(string=query)
    return (
        Chunks.order_by(sim, asc=False)
        .limit(limit)
        .select(Chunks.text, Chunks.title, sim)
    )
api = FastAPIRouter(name='docs')
api.add_insert_route(Docs, path='/docs', inputs=[Docs.document, Docs.title])
api.add_query_route(path='/search', query=search_docs)
```

## Questions {#questions}

### Do I need a vector database? {#faq-1}

You need an embedding index. You need a separate vector database when another system is already the source of truth, or when hosted ANN, hybrid fusion, or a query SLA is the product. If the table that stores the documents or frames can declare the index, a second database is optional. Pixeltable does that with EmbeddingIndex on the class.

### What are the best Pinecone alternatives in 2026? {#faq-2}

Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma, LanceDB, and pgvector are the usual alternatives, each a vector index with a different ops story. Pixeltable is an alternative to buying any of them for app-scale RAG: the index lives on the source row. It does not replace Pinecone at a global ANN bake-off.

### Is Pixeltable a Pinecone alternative? {#faq-3}

For typical document and multimodal RAG, yes: declare the index and query with similarity(string=). For a dedicated global vector serving tier, no — keep Pinecone. See Pixeltable vs Pinecone.

### Is pgvector enough instead of Pinecone? {#faq-4}

Often, if Postgres already holds the row and the vector count fits one instance. You still embed, upsert, and keep files in object storage unless the media lives in the same schema. Pixeltable vs Supabase covers Postgres plus pgvector as a backend.

### How is Weaviate different from a built-in embedding index? {#faq-5}

Weaviate is a database of objects and vectors, with hybrid BM25 and dense search on collections. A built-in embedding index is a structure on the table that stores the source file. Keep Weaviate when hybrid search at that engine is the product; see Pixeltable vs Weaviate.

### Do Railway, Render, Fly.io, Modal, or Vercel replace a vector database? {#faq-6}

No. They host or run a process: Git/Docker (Railway, Render), Machines (Fly.io), serverless GPU (Modal), or a frontend (Vercel). The vector index is still a separate box unless the application schema declares it. Pixeltable is that schema. Complementary. Last reviewed: Oct 2026.
