# Best Weaviate alternatives

A Weaviate alternative is another way to store objects and vectors and answer similarity queries, with or without hybrid BM25 plus dense fusion. Weaviate is an open-source vector database of collections, named vectors, and hybrid search. Alternatives are other ANN engines, a Postgres extension, or an index on the table that holds the source file.

## What a Weaviate alternative has to replace {#what-it-is}

Weaviate stores objects and named vectors. Hybrid search fuses BM25 with dense similarity; alpha balances the two. Vectorizer modules (CLIP locally; Google and others via API) can embed on insert. Weaviate Cloud is the hosted option. Docs: https://docs.weaviate.io/weaviate/search/hybrid and https://docs.weaviate.io/weaviate/search/near-media
You still chunk files, store bytes, and put HTTP in front unless something else owns those layers.

## How to choose {#how-to-choose}

Weaviate's usual reason to stay is hybrid fusion on collections. Pick away from that only when another contract is stronger.

- Keep Weaviate when hybrid BM25 plus dense search, named vectors, or a vectorizer module is the product.
- Pick Pinecone when a managed ANN SLA, namespaces, or integrated inference is the contract.
- Pick Qdrant when payload filters and a Rust engine you can self-host matter more than BM25 fusion.
- Pick Milvus when the index is a dedicated scale-out cluster.
- Pick pgvector when Postgres already holds the row and SQL is how you filter.
- Pick LanceDB when Lance blobs and embedded ANN are the product.
- Pick Chroma when local-first collections with dense, sparse, and hybrid search are enough.
- Skip a second database when the source table can declare the index. Keyword filters are then table queries, not BM25 fusion.

## The tools {#the-tools}

Pinecone Database serves full-text, dense, sparse, and hybrid search from one index, with namespaces and a hosted API. Docs: https://docs.pinecone.io/guides/get-started/overview
Qdrant supports dense and sparse vectors, BM25 full-text ranking on a text field, and payload indexes that extend HNSW. Docs: https://qdrant.tech/documentation/overview/
Milvus is a distributed vector database. Zilliz Cloud is the managed service. Docs: https://milvus.io/docs
pgvector is a PostgreSQL extension for vector columns and ANN. It is not a BM25 hybrid engine. Docs: https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector
LanceDB serves vector search, full-text search, hybrid search, reranking, filtering, and SQL on Lance tables. Docs: https://docs.lancedb.com/
Chroma documents dense, sparse, and hybrid search, plus full-text and regex, on collections. Docs: https://docs.trychroma.com/docs/overview/introduction

## Weaviate alternatives compared (last reviewed: Oct 2026) {#comparison}

| Tool | What it is | Hybrid BM25 + dense? | Open source? | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Weaviate | Vector database of objects and named vectors | Yes: query.hybrid (alpha, fusion_type) | Yes, plus Weaviate Cloud | Hybrid fusion and vectorizer modules on collections |
| Pinecone | Managed vector index with namespaces | Yes: sparse and dense from one index (vendor docs) | No | A hosted ANN SLA other services already call |
| Qdrant | Rust vector engine with payload filters | Lexical plus dense; BM25 on a text field (vendor docs) | Yes, plus Qdrant Cloud | Filtered ANN you operate |
| Milvus / Zilliz | Distributed vector database | See current Milvus hybrid docs; not Weaviate query.hybrid | Yes (Apache-2.0) | Scale-out ANN |
| pgvector | Postgres vector columns and ANN | No; keyword filters are SQL | Yes | Joins when Postgres already holds the row |
| LanceDB | Lance lake plus ANN, FTS, hybrid, SQL | Yes, on Lance tables (vendor docs) | Yes, plus Enterprise | Lake layout and embedded retrieval |
| Chroma | Collections of embeddings, documents, metadata | Yes: dense, sparse, and hybrid (vendor docs) | Yes (Apache-2.0) | Local-first retrieval |
| Pixeltable | EmbeddingIndex on the source table | No BM25 fusion; similarity plus where() on columns | Yes, plus Pixeltable Cloud | Insert updates the index; hybrid fusion is not the product |

## Where Pixeltable fits {#where-pixeltable-fits}

Use Pixeltable when hybrid BM25 fusion is not the product and the source file should live next to the index: EmbeddingIndex on the class, query with similarity(string=...). Pixeltable is not a vector database. Keep Weaviate when query.hybrid is the serving contract. Keep Pinecone, Qdrant, Milvus, pgvector, LanceDB, or Chroma when that engine is the product. How-to: hybrid search in Python (similarity plus where; BM25 fusion is Weaviate).

```python
import pixeltable as pxt
from pixeltable.functions.document import document_splitter
from pixeltable.functions.huggingface import sentence_transformer
from pixeltable.serving import FastAPIRouter
TableModel = pxt.model_base()
embed = sentence_transformer.using(
    model_id='sentence-transformers/all-MiniLM-L6-v2'
)
class Docs(TableModel, name='docs'):
    document: pxt.Document
    title: pxt.String
class Chunks(
    TableModel,
    name='chunks',
    base=Docs,
    iterator=document_splitter(
        document=Docs.document, separators='sentence,token_limit', limit=512
    ),
):
    __indexes__ = [pxt.EmbeddingIndex(text, string_embed=embed)]
@pxt.query
def search_docs(query: str, limit: int = 5):
    sim = Chunks.text.similarity(string=query)
    return (
        Chunks.order_by(sim, asc=False)
        .limit(limit)
        .select(Chunks.text, Chunks.title, sim)
    )
api = FastAPIRouter(name='docs')
api.add_insert_route(Docs, path='/docs', inputs=[Docs.document, Docs.title])
api.add_query_route(path='/search', query=search_docs)
```

## Questions {#questions}

### What is the best Weaviate alternative? {#faq-1}

Pinecone if you want a managed ANN SLA. Qdrant if you want a Rust engine with payload filters. Milvus if you need a dedicated cluster. pgvector if Postgres already holds the row. LanceDB or Chroma if you want another hybrid-capable store with a different ops story. Pixeltable if you do not need BM25 fusion and the index should sit on the source table.

### Does Pixeltable do hybrid search? {#faq-2}

Dense similarity plus SQL-style filters on table columns, yes. BM25 fused with dense similarity the way Weaviate query.hybrid does, no. Keep Weaviate for that fusion. See How do I do hybrid search in Python?

### Is Qdrant a drop-in Weaviate replacement? {#faq-3}

No. Both are open-source vector engines you can self-host or run as cloud. Client APIs, hybrid semantics, and module ecosystems differ. Read both vendors' hybrid docs before you swap.

### Can I keep Weaviate and store media elsewhere? {#faq-4}

Yes. That is the usual split: files in a bucket, objects and vectors in Weaviate, HTTP in front. An application schema is the other split: media columns, index, and routes in one file.
