Evaluation

Best FiftyOne alternatives

A FiftyOne alternative is another way to look at, label, or evaluate a computer-vision dataset. FiftyOne, from Voxel51, is the dataset app: embeddings, mistake views, zoo models, plugins, and COCO-style evaluation. Alternatives are annotation platforms, other dataset UIs, or a production table that is not a visual debugger.

What a FiftyOne alternative has to replace

FiftyOne is an open-source dataset visualization, curation, and evaluation app. pip install fiftyone; the zoo loads sample datasets; fo.launch_app opens the UI. Voxel51 documents a compatible deployment with multiuser collaboration, cloud data, and on-demand compute. Python 3.10-3.13. Video work needs FFmpeg. Docs: https://docs.voxel51.com/getting_started/install.html and https://docs.voxel51.com/

It is not an application backend. Inference on a changing production table, HTTP serving, and incremental insert are a different job.

How to choose

Separate looking at samples from labeling ops from producing rows.

  • Keep FiftyOne when the bottleneck is seeing embeddings, mistakes, and slices, or running evaluate_detections.
  • Pick CVAT when the job is team annotation of images and video with a dedicated labeling UI.
  • Pick Label Studio when you need a general annotation product across text, audio, and images.
  • Pick Encord or Roboflow when a commercial labeling and dataset platform is already the contract.
  • Pick a production table when insert should run models, cache outputs, and serve HTTP; export into FiftyOne when you need eyes on the set.

The tools

CVAT is an open-source annotation tool for images and video, with a web UI for boxes, polygons, tracks, and related tasks. Docs: https://docs.cvat.ai/

Label Studio is an open-source data labeling platform for many data types. It is an annotation product, not a production inference catalog. Site: https://labelstud.io/

Encord is a commercial data platform for labeling, curation, and model evaluation, aimed at teams that need annotation ops. Site: https://encord.com/

Roboflow is a commercial computer-vision platform for datasets, training, and deployment. Site: https://roboflow.com/ and docs: https://docs.roboflow.com/

FiftyOne itself stays on the list because OSS versus Voxel51's multiuser deployment is a real fork: keep OSS for a local App; pick the commercial deployment when collaboration and cloud data are the contract.

Where Pixeltable fits

Use Pixeltable when the job is a production table: Image and Video columns, computed model columns (for example detr_for_object_detection), incremental insert, and HTTP. It is not a labeling tool and not a replacement for the FiftyOne App. Explore in FiftyOne. Produce in Pixeltable. Export with pxt.io.export_images_as_fo_dataset, then fo.launch_app. Keep CVAT, Label Studio, Encord, or Roboflow when annotation ops are the product. Pixeltable removed its native Label Studio integration in v0.6.7.

Questions

What is the best FiftyOne alternative?

CVAT or Label Studio if you need a labeling UI. Encord or Roboflow if a commercial dataset platform is the contract. Pixeltable if you need incremental inference and serving, then export into FiftyOne when you need eyes on the set. FiftyOne remains the usual visual debugger.

Is Pixeltable a FiftyOne alternative?

No, not for looking at samples. Yes, for the production table FiftyOne is not. They join through export_images_as_fo_dataset. See Pixeltable vs Voxel51.

Is FiftyOne only for images?

No. Current FiftyOne includes video, 3D, audio, and plugins. Do not treat it as a CV-only leftover. Docs: https://docs.voxel51.com/

Should I use Label Studio with Pixeltable?

Label Studio is a fair annotation product on this list. A native Pixeltable Label Studio integration is deprecated. Do not build on that path. Export or annotate elsewhere.
